Biography:
David Larwill was influenced by movements as diverse as tribal art, aboriginal art, abstracted figuration of the 1940’s and 1950’s, as well as the naive style of DuBuffet and Art Brut.
His work was inspired by American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and Australian artist Peter Booth.
Controlled, sophisticated and characterised by their simplified forms and overall geometric patterns, Larwill’s paintings became well sort after as his popularity grew.
He was an artist who had harnessed and refined his emotional desire to put paint to canvas. This enabled him to produce works motivated by emotion and executed in a mature, considered and polished manner. It was Larwill’s unique mix of simplicity and sophistication that proved popular in his work.
Larwill became a significant, well known and admired name in the art world, with sell out shows in Sydney and Melbourne. His work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and Parliament House in Canberra.
David Larwill sadly passed away in June 2011.
